Steve Hart

I am a professional writer and editor with experience in regional and national newspapers, corporate and internal communications, online and print.

As an editor I have project managed many publications – frequently taking them from initial concept to delivery of the final product. Publications I have edited range from PDF newsletters to sections of the New Zealand Herald, magazines such as D-Photo and numerous inhouse publications for internal and external use.

Producing a publication can involve page planning, paper selection, negotiating with printers, picture selection, deciding on story content, assigning stories to writers, overseeing the design, liaising with advertisers, setting deadlines and working within the agreed budget and deadline. This is something I enjoy doing – taking responsibility and making decisions to produce compelling, interesting and well-designed publications.

As a journalist and writer I have covered everything from court reporting to company profiles – from hard news to soft features. Each story is treated differently depending on the subject, the publication and target audience. There is no one-size-fits all when it comes to writing.

In London I was managing editor of contract publishing firm Barkers Trident Communications (now Engage Group), prior to that I worked as a writer for Norwegian engineering firm Kvaerner. I travelled the world taking photographs and writing about its construction projects such as the Tsing Ma Bridge in Hong Kong, water treatment plants in London and pulp & paper mills in France.

I moved to New Zealand in 2000 to work at the New Zealand Herald where I spent seven years before leaving to go freelance.
